About
Oreti Estate was established in 1946 by Peter Harries and his wife, Rowena. They acquired the land, situated five miles above the already renowned Chania Estate, which rests on the same ridge descending from the Aberdare Mountains. "Oreti" is a Maori term signifying a place of profound peril and unspoiled beauty, also reminiscent of a beach near Rowena's upbringing in New Zealand. At present, Oreti is under the management of Boyce Harries and stands as one of the few remaining private coffee estates in Kenya, overseen by the descendants of its original founders. Its ‘AA’ grade is a classification of bean size, rather than quality, and includes beans 7.25mm and up. Sorting coffees by size creates different flavour profiles and makes it easier to roast evenly. AA grade coffees are the most prized for their crisp acidity and complex flavour profiles. Â
